Notes on creating the
Endangered Species
series

This series began in 2000 when I created an icon of the Earth as seen from space. In 2016, I created my first icon of a threatened species: the Honey Bee.

The series continues to grow and at present there are fourteen in all. They cover all the categories: fish, mammal, insect, plant, bird reptile and amphibian. My aim is to keep a balance of all the species so that all are represented equally.

The burning question now is which species to choose, since tragically, the numbers that are threatened or often critically endangered are overwhelming.

What is not generally known are the multiple factors I consider in selecting a species to depict: urgency of its status; aesthetic choices including color which affect viewing the series together as one gorgeous display of natural beauty and design; the emotive impact of a chosen position; and as mentioned, the balance of each category. Although the largest charismatic mammals most easily captivate our attention, the devastation of species at the minutest level is often greater, for instance in the insect world.

My ultimate goal is a one woman exhibition of the series. The next opportunity to see it will be in the exhibition, Earth on the Edge, which will take place in December 14 – 24, 2021 at Ceres Gallery, 547 West 27th Street, Suite 201, in Manhattan.
